Matching outline hearts on clasped hands

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are clasped together in a black and white photograph, with a small heart outline tattooed on the back of each wrist. The hearts are drawn in a thin, even black line with no shading. The hands fill the frame against a pale, mottled surface, with the light falling from the left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nadia had drawn the hearts herself, on the landing of the twelfth floor, with a biro that skipped every third line. Kerry held out her wrist first because she was the braver one, or said she was. 'Thin lines,' Kerry said. 'Nothing fancy, we're not animals.' Nadia pressed the nib into the skin until the ink bloomed, and the lift behind them groaned up from the ground floor.

For a year the hearts were the only thing that stayed the same. Kerry got a job at the bakery on Attercliffe Road and then a flat in Leeds with a balcony the size of a bath mat. Nadia stayed in the block, counting the bins, waving at the man who fed the pigeons on the bench below. Each morning she scrubbed at her wrist and the heart came up faint and grey as a bruise, then faded to nothing by teatime.

Kerry turned up in October with a suitcase and no warning. They sat on the stairwell step where the light from the broken window fell in a stripe across the concrete. Kerry pushed back her sleeve and there was the heart, still crisp, because she had been going over it with a fresh pen every week in her mum's bathroom, she admitted. Nadia laughed until she had to hold the rail.

They walked down twelve floors with their wrists touching, the way they used to on the way to school, and at the bottom Nadia found a biro in her coat pocket. She didn't need it. She drew a second heart on Kerry's palm anyway, and the lift doors slid open on the empty lobby as if they had been waiting for them.
