Matching script wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, showing a fine line script tattoo on each wrist. Each script word is linked to a thin black line that runs around the wrist, forming a band-like design. The black ink sits on pale skin against a plain light background, and the wrists are the main focus of the composition.

Mari had never once walked past the apple wall without stopping, so when the gardener's boy came running down the lane with his cap in his hands, she knew before he spoke that the frost had got into the south orchard. Her sister Ada was already on the path with a trowel, kneeling in the wet leek bed as if the leeks had asked for her.

Their grandmother had taught them the old rule of the garden: whatever you plant with your hands you must also bind with your hands, or it will wander off. So each spring the two girls tied a length of black thread round their wrists at the well, and each summer they wrote a name along it in soft ink made from crushed bramble. Mari's said Ada. Ada's said Mari. The thread ran round and round and never ended, which their grandmother said was the only honest thing about it.
Then Ada took the boat to the mill towns and did not come back for three winters. The garden went to ruin. Mari pruned the apples alone, talking to the trees because there was nobody else to talk to, and every morning she checked her wrist, where the thread had faded to a grey shadow over the bone.
On the first warm day of the fourth spring, a woman came up the lane with a bundle and a limp. Mari did not run. She set down her shears and held out her wrist, and the woman held out hers, and the two lines met at the gate, where the ink had finally darkened enough to read across.
