The tattoo spells the word love in a flowing script, with the o replaced by a square outlined box containing a five-point star. The linework is fine and even, with light grey shading inside the box and along the letter strokes. The photograph is black and white, with a hand wearing a ring holding the forearm just above the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Marjorie Penhale kept the lamp at Scarrow Head for thirty-one winters, and she never once let the square brass shutter stick. Every dusk she wound it open by hand, so the light went out in a clean star, because the fishing boats out of Porthcarn had learned to look for that shape and not the plain flash of the others.

Her husband Tom had made the shutter himself, a little tin box with a star punched through its face, and he had hung it on the gallery rail before the storm of '74 took him off the rocks. She did not mend it after that. She just kept winding.

One January a boy came up the cliff path with a letter from the harbour master, saying the Ardwen lugger was overdue and nobody could say which side of the bar she had gone over. Marjorie sent him back down with a spare lamp and told him to watch for the star. He asked her how she knew it would reach. She said she did not know, only that she had been sending it for thirty-one years and it had always come back.

The Ardwen came in at first light, her sails torn but her crew whole, the skipper swearing he had seen one steady star through the murk and steered for it like a man following a name called across water. Marjorie went down to the quay to watch the men unload, and nobody mentioned the star again.
