Lupin flower on the ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A tall spike of purple lupin flowers rises up the ankle, with a yellow-green bud at the top and a stem ending in green serrated leaves at the base. The petals and leaves are shaded with soft gradients and fine highlights to give a three-dimensional, botanical look. The design is centred on the ankle and sits against pale skin with a dark background.

Mind the step, it's loose, the same as everything else on this lane. My father laid these flags and never once lifted them to check what was underneath, which is how he came to lose a tin of lupin seed in 1958 and never find it again. He swore it was the wet that rotted it. My mother swore it was the goats. I have my own view, which is that some things are meant to get lost and come up somewhere else.

That summer the lupins came up along the wall nobody had planted them on, tall as a boy and purple as a bruise, and the bees went daft for them. Mrs Pryce from the chapel wanted cuttings for her front border. Mr Hale wanted them gone because they were, in his words, a weed with pretensions. I told them both the same thing, that a flower only grows where the ground has been turned over at least once in its life.
And so I went looking, that autumn, with a trowel and a bad knee, and under the flags I found the tin, rusted through but full of seed still rattling about like dice. I sowed what I could. The stalks that came up the next year had a yellow tip on them, bright as a candle nobody had lit yet, and that is the part I still show people. Plant it low, I tell them. Give it a bit of wall to lean on. It will climb.
