Mandala and feather on the upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular mandala flower with layered petals and a dotted centre sits on the inner upper arm, with a small shaded feather below and to the right. The linework is fine and dark, with stippled dotwork detail filling the mandala. The ink is black and grey on a light skin tone, and the composition is centred on the arm with a blurred background.

Dear Priya,

I found the compass case in the loft yesterday, the one with the brass hinge that never shut properly. Inside, folded into a square, was the drawing you made for me the summer before Year Eleven: a flower with rings of petals and a dot at its centre, drawn with a Biro so hard it nearly tore the paper. You told me it was a mandala and that if you stared at the middle long enough the rest of the world would go quiet. I never managed it. I was always watching the door.
At the reunion nobody mentioned the Biro or the detentions. Mr Ashby, who taught us geography and never once got the Nile right, gave a speech about our futures. Dev had two children and a van. Tomasz asked whether I still had the grey feather you found on the canal path, the one from a jackdaw, and I said of course, which was a lie. I had lost it on the bus to Stockport in 2004.
Driving home I pulled into the layby by the reservoir and sat with the engine off. The light was going orange over the water. I unfolded the paper and tried to count the petals the way you taught me, and got to eleven before a lorry drowned out my thinking.
So I have decided. On Saturday I am going to the studio on Crown Street where the man with the steady hands works, and I am having the flower put on my arm, with a feather beside it pointing at nothing in particular. You can tell me off when you come up for Easter. Bring the Biro.
Love, Jo
