Every morning the glass wore a circle of white petals, round as a cartwheel, with little seeds of ice pricked into the middle. Your great-grandfather swore it was the harvest moon trying to get in. Then the sun dropped behind the Coldharbour ridge, and the snow took the colours it was given. Purple first, like a bruise on the hills, then a pink that bled out from the edges of the frost, then a blue as cold as the well water. Tilly pressed her thumb to the middle of the flower, and a hole opened. Through it came the whole sunset, sliding across the flagstones like spilt paint.

She stood in that light until her hand went numb. When her father came in with the milk, the frost had closed over the gap again, petal by petal, and the only thing left was a smudge of pink on her thumb. Her mother scrubbed it off with lard and never once asked where it came from. Some windows are only windows, and some are kept for children who know where to press.
