Mandala and flower of life on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the bare upper back of a woman with long, straight blonde hair draped over one shoulder, seen from behind against a plain pale wall. A large black tattoo sits between the shoulder blades and below the neck, formed of a central flower of life pattern of overlapping circles inside a ring of ornamental, lace-like mandala petals. The linework is fine and even, with the dense black ink and open areas of skin creating a clean, high-contrast design.

Dear Ada, the net came in off the Dolly again last night, torn clean through the middle, and I sat up with it until the lamp guttered. I worked the mesh back from the outside in, the way Dad taught me, because he always said a hole is only a circle that has forgot its shape.

You asked in your last letter why I bother with the old pattern, the one Mrs Penhallow's grandmother worked into the head rope of every boat in the harbour. Seven rings, each touching six others, and at the heart a smaller ring nested inside the first. You can draw it with a compass in an afternoon, but you will never get the spacing right by eye. I tried for a whole winter when I was your age. The fish don't care, and the buyers don't care, but a net holds better when every knot sits where the pattern says it should.
Last Tuesday the Morwenna came in with her stern gone, and Jack Tregear swore the sea had taken it. I unpicked the whole piece on the quay and found the cut had been made neat as lace, right where the rings meet. Whoever did it knew exactly where the knots were weakest. I didn't say so to Jack. I just reknotted it and charged him the usual.
Come Sunday and bring your spool. I'll show you where the rings meet, and you can tell me whether you see what I see.
