Dad's clock had stopped at twenty to four for as long as I could remember, and I'd grown up thinking that was simply what time looked like on the Trent. The face was a brass mandala, its petals picked out in enamel, with little teal stars set between the points where the cabin lamp caught them. Beneath it hung a long curving stem of pendulum, shaped like a paisley leaf, and at its foot sat a cog no bigger than a shirt button.

I took it apart the winter the boat went up on the mud below Gunthorpe lock. Nobody else was going to do it. Half the gears had a tooth missing, and several spirals had been bent back by some old knock, so I spent three weeks at the saloon table with a jeweller's loupe and a tin of paraffin, coaxing each spring back into its curl. Mum brought tea and never asked what I was doing, which was how she'd always been with Dad's things.

On the last night I wound it and set the hands by the wireless. The stem began to swing. The mandala turned its slow half-circle, the stars flashing as the lamp moved across them, and the cabin filled with the small dry tick I'd been missing without knowing it. Dad's old chair creaked by the stove, though nobody was in it, and I found I was smiling at the empty room as I reached for the kettle.
