Mandala and moon on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink mandala sits on the inner forearm near the wrist, made of layered petal shapes around a central crescent moon. Fine dotwork stippling fills the outer ring and petal edges, while solid black fill gives the centre strong contrast. The out-of-focus background shows a forested mountain valley under a pale sky.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dale had the compass open on the tailgate when the cloud came off the ridge, and he didn't bother to close it. The valley below Harrow Fell was already going blue at the edges, the pines dark as ink, and the lake at the bottom had taken the last of the light and was holding it like a coin. Maggie was still on the scree path with the dog. He could hear her calling its name, which was Biscuit, and then he could hear nothing at all.

She came back at dusk with the dog under one arm and a flat grey stone in her other hand. It was round, pocked all over with tiny holes where the water had worked it, and when she turned it over there was a pale crescent scratched into the face, as neat as a thumbnail. "Somebody's been counting the moons up here," she said. "Look at the petals round the edge. Some old surveyor, I'd bet, bored out of his skull."

Dale took it and held it to the lamp. The lines spread outward in rings, each one broken into dots so fine he had to tilt his head to see them, and the dots grew thicker towards the middle until the crescent sat in a black bloom of shadow. He thought of the map pinned up in the hut, the one with contour lines pencilled in by a man who had never come back down. Every ring had a name written beside it. None of them had been filled in.

They slept in the hut that night with the stone on the sill between them. In the morning the cloud had lifted and the valley lay open, the lake lit up like a plate, and Maggie pointed out the far slope where a lone larch stood on the skyline, bent into the shape of a half moon. "That's where he meant," she said, and Dale, who had never once in thirty years believed in signs, found he was already lacing his boots.
