Mandala and wing back piece in black and grey

Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph shows a person seen from behind, with the head bowed and the face hidden. Their back is covered in fine dotwork tattoos, including a large central mandala, a winged eye above it, and further feathered wing shapes on each shoulder blade. The soft studio lighting and dark background keep the focus on the tattoo's stippled texture and symmetry.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You learn the Marigold Pavilion by its floor before you learn anyone's name. Forty years of Saturday shoes have worn a shallow ring into the boards, and the ring turns under your heels like the hand of a clock that has lost its numbers. Above the bandstand the ceiling rose is a mandala of plaster, eight petals of gilt gone the colour of weak tea, and when the lights go down it is the only thing in the room that never moves.

Mrs Adair, who keeps the ticket booth, tells you the eye above the stage was painted by a sign-writer who owed the council money. He worked it into the wing motif on the proscenium so the band would have something to look up at. "Nobody looks up," she says. "They look at each other, then at their feet." You look up anyway. Every night while you sweep you count the feathers in the plaster until the broom handle is warm in your palms.

The power fails in the middle of a waltz in October. Couples stand stranded in the dark, and somebody's torch slides across the stage and finds the painted eye. You hum the only tune you know by heart, the one your father used to whistle over the washing-up, and slowly the room finds its feet by sound. Nobody counts the steps. The floor takes the weight of them all.

In the morning you come in before the cleaners and stand in the middle of the worn ring with the chairs still stacked behind you. The sun comes through the high windows and reaches the plaster first, lighting the petals one by one, and for once you look down at nothing but the floor you have been keeping.
