Angel wings across a back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a bare back with a large pair of angel wings tattooed across it, spreading from the shoulder blades down towards the sides of the body. The feathers are rendered in detailed, layered shading with fine tonal gradations and sharp highlights along the edges. The background is plain black, which makes the pale skin and grey ink stand out strongly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the time the rain came over the fish stalls at Saltgate, Ada had sorted three hundred grey feathers into piles by the length of their shafts, and the stranger had not yet bought any. He stood under the awning of the umbrella man with his collar turned up, watching her fingers, and when the bell of St Brannoc struck noon he asked whether she sold wings.

She told him wings were not sold on Thursdays. Feathers were sold by the pound, and a wing was only a great many feathers that had agreed to stay together. He laughed at that, though he did not look like a man who laughed often, and set down a coin older than the market itself.

All that autumn he came back every Thursday. Ada took his coin and mended the shafts he brought her, binding them with thread waxed in candle grease. Each feather was grey on one side and dark on the other, and each had a small notch cut near the root where a thumbnail would sit. She never asked what they were for, and he never said.

On the last Thursday of the season the rain stopped at the bell. The stranger shook out his coat, and the stall was quiet except for the drip from the awning. He left the finished feathers in a neat stack beside the scales. Ada kept the longest one. When the market packed up she held it to the lamp and saw that its dark side had gone pale, as though it had been carrying the weather for someone else.
