Mandala flower and lace design sketches

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

Two pencil drawings on paper show ornamental designs built around a central flower with layered petals and a mandala-like rosette. Fine, detailed linework forms lace-like patterns, paisley shapes and leaves, with some shading and construction lines still visible. The designs are drawn in greyscale and each sheet has a single central motif with flowing branches extending outward.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the time the night bell rang across the Lenton side, the top floor of Brewer's Yard had gone quiet apart from the jacquard clacking below, and Mrs Pargeter had left a cup of tea going cold beside your board. She wanted the lotus for the Christmas order, the one whose petals open like cupped hands. You had drawn it four times already, each sheet pinned to the window so the streetlamp could show you where the light fell.

The trouble was the paisley. Every curl wanted to close itself into a seed, and the lace setters downstairs needed open ground to punch their holes. You built the rosette at the centre first, ringed it with fine circles so the net would hold its shape, then let the branches run off the edge of the sheet as though they had somewhere else to be. Somewhere near three, you rubbed out a whole petal with the heel of your hand and started it again.

At half past four the pattern-cutter came up the stairs with his coat over his shoulders. He held the sheet to the light, tilted it, and said nothing for a long time. Then he tapped the lower leaf with a fingernail. "That one's breathing," he said. "Leave it."

You left it. When the carts came for the morning run, the drawing went down in the rolls with the others, and by dinner it was on a loom, the first stitch going through the exact place where you had rubbed the petal out and drawn it again.
