Mandala flower tattoo on a shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala design shaped like a layered flower covers the shoulder and upper back. Fine black outlines form the petals, and dotwork fills the centre and inner rings, with soft warm tones blended into some petals. The composition is centred on the shoulder, with two small dangling ornaments trailing below the main flower.

The design had been sketched on the back of a torn fairground handbill, and Ada had been arguing with it since the rain began. Every petal she traced bled too heavy, and the centre kept collapsing into a grey smudge however many dots she pressed into it. Her father used to say that a circle was only a promise you kept with a compass. She had no compass, just a jam jar lid and a pencil worn down to the nub.

Teodor the strongman came through the flap with two cups of tea and a towel over one shoulder. He studied the drawing for a long time, the way men study a letter they cannot quite read. 'It's the lotus from the Hendry Sisters' booth,' he said at last. 'Forty years they pinned it above the till. When they sold up it went into a crate with the ornaments.' He tapped the margin, where two small brass charms had been sketched trailing from the bottom petal, each with a loop and a hook.
Ada had not known the rings meant anything. Teodor counted them off on his thick fingers: the first for Carlisle, the second for Doncaster, the third for the winter in Wells when the ground froze and nobody came. Each ring was a town they had stayed in, and the petals between were the nights they had kept going anyway. She added dots to the outer ring, then washed the inner petals with a faint ochre, the colour of the lamp.
By dawn the lotus was finished, every petal dark and certain at the edges. The charms swung from the bottom point like plumb lines. Outside the engines turned over and the wagons began to roll toward the next town, and Ada pressed the lid down to seal the last dot before going out to help with the canvas.
