Mandala, moon and sun designs on forearms
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three forearms are shown side by side, each with a single design. On the left is a circular mandala with a flower at its centre, in the middle a crescent moon with a small star, and on the right a sun with radiating rays. The designs are drawn in brown lines with some fill, and the turquoise wristbands and bracelets sit around them against warm skin tones.

The sun came up over the harbour wall before anyone in Porthgwidden had thought to light the range, so Mrs Tremayne sent the twins down to the boarding house yard with a bucket and a bad temper. Their mother had painted the yard gate blue the summer before, and the paint had come off on everybody's hands since.

The lodger in the top room had given them each a dab of brown ink from a little tin and told them to draw whatever they liked on their arms. Pell chose the moon, because she could make a thin crescent and a star beside it without the star looking like a spider. Wenna chose the sun, and gave it too many rays, and said that was the point. Their brother Tam, who was nine and had no patience, drew a flower inside a ring of dots and said it was a compass that only worked for lost cats.
When the ink dried it stayed brown for a week, and the girls would not wash their arms, not even at chapel. Pell said the moon would go pale when the tide was at its lowest. Wenna said the sun would keep her warm when the boats were late. Tam said nothing, but he kept the flower turned towards the water.
On the eighth morning the boats came in early, all of them, and the lodger came down the steps with his tin under his arm. He looked at the three forearms lined up on the yard wall and laughed until he had to sit down. Then he took the lid off the tin and showed them there was nothing left in it but dust. Pell rubbed her moon with her thumb and found the ink had gone into her skin like a secret she would have to keep.
