Nell Corran kept her lamp lit at noon, because the sun had gone down into the Ouse at Hadley lock and nobody on the river could say when it would climb out again. The bargees ate their bread in the grey and cursed the cold. This autumn a heron had taken the chain in its beak and not given it back.

She poled the Marigold out past the reeds on the ninth morning with a bucket of tallow, a loaf, and the small brass kettle her mother had dented falling down the cabin steps. Old Tobias sat on the sluice with his trousers rolled and his feet in the black water, and he did not look up. "The sun is hungry for something that burns," he said. "It won't be fed on bread."

Then the river went bright beneath the boat. Light came up through the water in rays that bent and fluttered like the edges of a flame, and the lamp lay in the reeds, cold and dark. When Nell looked back from the lock gate, the sun was rising over the willows, round and pale as a plate, and her hands smelt of tallow for a week.
