Mandala star with dotted vertical line

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

The design shows a symmetrical eight-pointed star at the centre of a dotted circle, with a ring of leaf-like curls and fine linework around a central dot. A thin vertical line runs above and below the star, ending in a small diamond-shaped motif with a dotted tail. It is drawn in black ink with stippled shading and no colour, on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mara had the chart open on the lamp-room sill when the fog came in off the Skerries, and she had to wipe the glass with her sleeve to see the bearing again. Her father had drawn the compass rose himself in the margin of the log, eight points inked over a dotted ring, and every page since had carried it the same way, as if the sea might forget its own directions without reminding.

Tomorrow the relief boat would bring her brother from the mainland, and she had not yet decided what to tell him about the light. The lamp had flickered twice that week. The oil was low and the wick was older than either of them. She trimmed it by feel, the brass warm against her knuckles, and counted the seconds between the flashes the way her father had taught her, one line, one dot, one line.

Near four in the morning the fog thinned and a single boat showed to the south, its lantern swinging wrong, too low on the water. Mara climbed the iron stairs two at a time, lit the spare, and turned the shutter by hand until the beam found the rocks where the boat was drifting. She watched its bow come round, slow and deliberate, following the path of light out past the shoal.

When the sky went grey she sat down on the step with the log open on her knees and drew the compass again beneath her father's, a little crooked, the diamond at the bottom where the line ran out into open water. Then she wrote the time, the wind, the boat's safe passage, and under it, in small letters, that the light had held.
