Stacked triangles, circles and arrows design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing on a white background shows a vertical design built from layered triangles at the top, with dots inside some of them. Three circles of varying sizes are stacked along a central vertical line, and arrowheads and a dotted line sit at the base. The linework is thin and uniform with no shading, and the composition is centred and symmetrical.

Mind the bottom step, it's worn hollow where a hundred years of boots have gone up and down. Sit there, by the brazier, and I'll tell you about Ada Penhallow, who climbed the signal tower on Gallows Hill every night of the winter the river froze. She carried a tin lantern in one hand and a plumb bob on a length of waxed silk in the other, because the men who built the tower had sworn it stood perfectly true, and Ada had found it did not.

The tower was three stacked rings of grey stone, each one a little smaller than the last, with a lamp room at the top under a frame of iron triangles. The city below ran its messages up and down the river by lamp: a red light for the lock keepers, a white one for the bridge. Ada's job was to watch the lamps answer each other across the water and write down every reply, so the wrong word never reached the wrong bank. Most nights the lights said nothing of interest. One night a white lamp on the far shore answered a question nobody had asked.
She hung the plumb bob from the top triangle and watched the silk fall straight down past the three rings, past the arrows cut into the foundation, and into the dark line of the old tunnel that ran under the water. The bob did not swing. It pointed exactly at the place where the lock keepers had been drowning messages for years. In the morning she wrote one line in her ledger, and the river kept freezing, and the lamps kept answering, and nobody ever again asked her why she climbed so slowly.
