Stacked triangles and arrow line design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing on a plain white background shows a cluster of overlapping triangles at the top, some solid and some dotted, with small dots at their centres. A single vertical line runs down from the cluster to a set of arrowheads and a short dotted tail at the bottom. The linework is clean and even, and the composition is centred and symmetrical in its upper part.

Dear Nell, the plumb line has been swinging over the crossing since Tuesday, and Master Hollis will not let me touch it, so I am watching it instead. He hung it from the broken rib above the altar, where the vault gave way in the great storm, and he says a true line never lies. Every morning he sights up it with one eye shut and pencils three dots on the flagstones: one for the point of the spire that is no longer there, one for the middle of the nave, and one for the door we walk through.

The stones keep their own counsel. Yesterday the bob settled a finger's width east of where his chalk said it would, and he went quiet in that way he has, then sent me down to the crypt with a lamp and a coil of cord. I found a slab with an iron ring rusted into it and a groove worn smooth by something heavier than feet. The cord ran straight from the ring to a point under the stairs, as if the whole ruin had been drawn from one spot and that spot lay underground.
Hollis says the three triangles nest the way the old masons built them, each inside the next, so that a man standing at the centre sees the same shape wherever he turns. I told him I would rather stand at the bottom of the line. He laughed and said that was the arrow's business, not ours, and the arrow pointed at a place no survey had ever marked. We are going down with a spade on Monday.
I have put a dot of my own on that spot, smaller than his. When I looked back up the line from there, the bob hung just clear of the flagstones, as though it were waiting for someone to come up and read it. Write soon, and tell Mum the castle is not haunted, only very exact.
