Mandala tattoo on a foot

Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A grey mandala tattoo of layered petals and dotted rings covers the top of a foot. The design uses fine linework for the outlines and stippled dots for the shading, with the shading fading toward the edges. A hand holds a brush dusting orange powder near the tattoo, and a second hand holds an open compact of the same orange colour at the top right.

Brother Aldous had ground the red earth for three winters before the abbot allowed him near the chapter house floor. Every morning he knelt on the cold flags with a horsehair brush and dotted the circle outward, petal by petal, until the stone looked like the underside of a flower.

The villagers said the dots were counted: one for each bell the abbey rang in a year, one for each soul buried in its yard. Brother Aldous did not count them. He only stippled, lighter at the rim so the eye would walk inward toward the centre, where the dots crowded together like bees at a hive.

In the thaw, a stranger came up the track carrying a box of powder the colour of a fox's coat, and asked to buy the old red. Aldous refused, then gave him a pinch of his own. The stranger tipped it into a silver compact, snapped the lid shut, and walked off down to the mill without thanks.

Come Lady Day the mandala had faded at the edges where the rain got in. Aldous went to scrub it and found every petal filled in overnight, each dot restored in orange, and beside the centre a small smudge of powder in the shape of a thumb. He sat back on his heels and laughed until the abbot came out to see what the noise was about.
