Mandala tattoo on a foot
Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A grey mandala tattoo made from stippled dots and fine radiating petal shapes sits on the top of a bare foot. A hand holds a small brush that is applying bright orange pigment beside the design, and a open pot of the same orange product is visible at the top right. The lighting is even and the skin sits against a pale blue towel.

Dear Ivo, the vermilion finally came up from Brunswick, though the customs men at Harwich kept the tin for nine days and I have been pacing the workshop like a caged finch. I mixed a test on the back of a spoiled sheet this morning. It sits too cold beside the old lake, so I am going to warm it with a touch of madder and see whether the petals stop looking like they belong to a different building.

The roundel above platform four at Carrowmere is sixteen petals of plaster, each one ringed with stipple, and every dot was pricked into the wet surface with a bradawl by a man called Ezra Thorne in 1891. Hundreds of thousands of blows, and not one of them the same. Mr Abbott wants the outer petals picked out before the Lord Lieutenant comes through on the 4.10 on Friday, and he has no notion how long it takes to coax a single stipple back to life without drowning it in paint.
This morning the boy from the signal box stood at my elbow the whole time I worked, holding his cap in both hands like it might bolt. He pointed at a fleck near the centre that I had taken for damage. It was a dot, pricked so lightly that the dust had almost hidden it, and Thorne had clearly left it as a tiny mark of his own. I was going to clean it out. Instead I have left it alone, and I have told Abbott that the original work is not to be improved. Somebody on the platform will have to look hard to find it, and I think Thorne would have liked that.
