Small lotus tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small lotus flower with layered petals sits on the inner wrist of a forearm, with a knitted sleeve visible at the top of the frame. The linework is fine and dark, and the petals are filled with dotted and hatched shading in grey. The plain white background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The tank in the Victorian glasshouse had gone green and thick by the time Ruth Adeyemi decided the lotus was dead. She said so to the volunteers on Tuesday, and Dev, who had carried the tub up the iron stairs himself in 1998, only shrugged and went back to his crossword.

On Friday she found the seed pod. It sat at the edge of the mud like a cracked pepper pot, its holes dark and dry, and when she tipped it over a single grey seed rolled into her palm, hard as a pebble. She had read that such seeds could sleep for centuries and wake when the water was right. She thought of her mother, who had kept a lotus on a windowsill in Lagos and insisted it only opened for weddings.
She nicked the seed with a square of sandpaper, as the leaflet said, and soaked it in a jam jar of rainwater on the sill beside the kettle. Every morning she checked it before the tea went cold. On the Saturday the glasshouse was booked for Tomasz and Lily, who wanted nothing but white roses and a string quartet, and Ruth arrived at seven with the jar wrapped in a tea towel inside her coat.
By noon a pale tongue of green had pushed through the water, and by the time the couple said their vows, a pink bud the size of a thumbnail had folded itself open. Its petals came apart slowly, one layer and then the next, and the light through the glass caught every ridge. Nobody in the rows of chairs noticed. Ruth did, and she kept her hands still in her lap.
