Mandala with central eye on top of foot

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

A radial mandala tattoo sits across the top of a bare foot, centred on a detailed eye surrounded by layered petals and leaves. The fine outlines are drawn in a single purple-blue ink, with light hatching and dotted accents within the petals. The foot rests on a weathered wooden bench against a soft, blurred green background, with a silver toe ring and an orange cord anklet visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The indigo vat at Lower Crake had gone sour by the time you reached the edge of the forest, and Hester Pell would not let you pour it out until you had seen the flower. She said it grew where the beeches gave way to bracken, a bloom the colour of a bruised plum, with leaves cut like fern and petals stacked in rings. In the middle, she said, was an eye. Most people who went looking came back with nothing but nettle rash, so you took the stone bottle she pressed on you and went up the path alone.

The bracken was wet and loud with rooks. You found the flower without trying, sitting in a hollow as though someone had set it down there to dry. Its petals were layered like the scales of a fish, dotted with small pale seeds, and at its heart the eye lay open and grey as river water. It did not blink. It looked at the bottle in your hand, then at the bag of cloth you had carried for dyeing, then, unhurriedly, at you.

"I was sent for the colour," you said, because that seemed the honest answer, and the eye narrowed. The petals began to fold inward, one ring at a time, until the hollow was dark. You understood then that the bloom had never been for dyeing. Hester had been feeding it for forty years with the stories the village told about the lost, the strayed cattle and the weddings never held, and the forest had been keeping every word as pigment.

You knelt, uncorked the bottle, and poured in the one true thing you had never said aloud: that you had taken the blue thread from her loom and hidden it in your sleeve. The petals loosened. The eye closed. When you walked down at dusk the vats had cleared to a deep, clean blue, and the cloth Hester lifted from them was printed all over with small pale dots, like seeds.
