Ruth had logged eleven hundred lost items since March, and the black lace shawl was the only one that smelled faintly of rain and oranges. It had come in a carrier bag from platform four, folded around a return ticket for a train that stopped running in 1981. Its scalloped edge curled like a row of eyelashes, and she held it under the strip light for a long minute before writing it up.

The woman in the grey coat was on the footbridge again that evening, as she had been every evening that week. Ruth had watched her from the ticket barrier: up the steps, across the iron span, down the far stairs, then back up again, never once boarding anything. The bridge doubled back on itself like a figure eight laid on its side, and the woman walked it as if she had been told to keep going until someone stopped her.
Ruth caught her at the top of the stairs and held out the shawl. The woman touched the lace without taking it. "My mother's," she said. "She came through here every Thursday for thirty years to meet a man who never got off the train. She always said if she walked the bridge long enough, the timetable would give up and let him come."
Ruth didn't know what to say, so she said nothing, and the 19:10 pulled in below them with its doors sighing open. Nobody got off. The woman smiled, took the shawl at last and draped it over the rail, then walked back down the far stairs toward platform four. When Ruth came in the next morning, the shawl had gone, and the lost property ledger had a new entry in her own handwriting that she didn't remember writing: one passenger, one ticket, single.
