Mandala tattoo on upper back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A circular mandala with eight pink and magenta petals surrounds a central teal ring with a yellow dot. Outer rings of teal, green and orange are edged with scalloped black lines and small dots. The shading is soft within bold black outlines, and the design sits centred on the upper back against pale skin.

Sit down, the lot of you, and leave the bread alone until I've finished. This is the story of the tablecloth that nearly ruined the Harbour Street wedding of 1952, and how a flower with eight pink petals saved it. Everyone knows Dorothy Kettle could never sew a straight seam, but she could draw a perfect circle with a bent tin of paint and a steady wrist, and that was the gift she brought to her own wedding.

The trouble started when Mrs Fenwick, the groom's mother, decided the tables were not dressed properly. Dorothy had promised Irish linen by noon, and at eleven the linen was still in a van somewhere past the bridge. So she sat on the back step with a jam jar of water, a box of watercolours and a pencil, and she drew a mandala on the plain cloth itself, petal by petal. She put a ring of teal round a yellow dot no bigger than a barley grain, then green and orange rings beyond it, edged with little black scallops the way her mother had finished the doilies.
By the time the van turned up the cloth was dry, and half the village was crowding the back gate to see it. Mrs Fenwick would not look at it for a full minute. Then she asked who had done it, and when she heard, she said nothing at all. She only folded the cloth carefully and carried it to the top table herself. Nobody touched the bread that afternoon. They were all too busy staring at those pink petals spread out under the light from the windows.
So when you pass the cloth round tonight, mind the middle. That yellow dot is where Dorothy's pencil slipped, and she would never let anyone wipe it away.
