Nobody in the company could agree who had first painted the word across the big top, only that it had been there longer than the elephants. Mags swore it was her mother, who lettered the bills for the Pemberton Brothers' show in Scarborough before the brothers sold up. Ivo said it was a typo that became a creed. Either way, by the August we were folding the tent for the last time in a Hartlepool car park, and the word still hung above the trapeze in letters two feet high, the paint gone the colour of weak tea.

I was the one who had to take it down. Ruthie Vane, who owned what was left of us, wanted it kept for the auction, so I stood on a ladder with a cloth and a jar of turpentine and tried to lift the letters off without tearing the canvas. The m came away clean. The a took a corner of the sky with it. When I reached the final o I found, pencilled faintly underneath in a hand I didn't know, a line: we will not be sold as a single act. Someone had meant it as a joke, or maybe as a promise.

Ruthie bought the letters back for twelve pounds and a bottle of gin. Ivo gave me the last o, which he'd cut out and varnished, and I still keep it on the windowsill of my flat in Leeds, where the morning light comes through it sideways and throws a small ring on the wall.
