Still I rise script lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the words still i rise written in a flowing, pointed-pen script in black ink on a plain white background. Thin hairline strokes extend from either end of the lettering and cross above the word, while the letterforms have thick and thin contrast. The composition is centred and horizontal, with no shading or colour.

Mr Okafor from the bakery bought three and asked after you, so I told him you were resting, which is near enough true.

The man who ran the lettering stall beside mine packed up early today, leaving his brass nibs and a sheaf of practice sheets under a tin of pencils. I found one sheet pinned to the back of the tent with the same two words written over and over, looping and dipping like they were trying to climb out of the page. Still I rise, it said at the top, in ink so black it had bled through to the next sheet. I took it home in my coat pocket and it's on the mantelpiece now, propped against your clock.
I don't know why it made me cry, Mags. Perhaps it was the thin hairline strokes trailing off either end, as if the words had somewhere else to be and were in no hurry to get there. I'll post you the sheet with this letter. Keep it somewhere you'll see it each morning, and mind the kettle, the hob is temperamental. Come home when the doctors let you. The jam will keep, and so, I think, will we.
