Maple leaf on the back of a hand
Botanical · Hand · Colour · Photo
A small maple leaf with a thin dark stem sits on the back of a hand. The outline is dark red, and the leaf body is shaded from orange near the top to deeper red at the lobes. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, giving the leaf a natural look against the skin, with a wooden floor and ripped denim shorts in the background.

The stall had been sold to a man from Leeds who wanted it painted green, so Marnie spent the last wet Saturday of October scraping old name boards off the wall while the rain came sideways under the market awning. Everything else went into the skip behind the fishmonger's, where a gull was already picking at a torn bag of seed.

At half past three a boy in a borrowed anorak came looking for change for the bus and stayed to watch her work. He had a paper bag of conkers he kept turning in his fist. When she asked what he wanted, he held one out to her, glossy and split at the seam, and said his nan had told him they were lucky if you carried them through autumn. Marnie said she had never been lucky in her life, but she took it anyway and put it in her coat pocket beside her keys.
The leaf came off the wall last, pinned under a strip of tape that had gone the colour of weak tea. Underneath, in faded pencil, someone had drawn a maple leaf with its stem bent to one side, and beside it the word Canada, crossed out and rewritten as home. Marnie stood with the board in her hands while the rain drummed on the awning. Then she folded it in half, tucked it under her arm, and went out into the wet to find a bus that would take her somewhere she had not yet decided to stay.
