Black and grey tattoo of two figures in gas masks kissing, with red-washed and grey hearts, on a person's upper back.

Masked couple kissing with hearts on back

Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two figures wearing gas masks, leaning in to kiss, with heart shapes behind and beside them. The linework is bold, with solid black areas, grey shading and dripping black lines running down from the figures. A soft red wash sits behind the large heart and the smaller hearts, set against the skin of the upper back.

The stencil went up on the back wall of the Fenwick Road allotments the same week the council sent round its letter about the bonfires. Nobody claimed it. Two figures in gas masks leaned together over a cracked brick, and a red heart bloomed behind them like a bruise that had decided to be kind.

Dot Abernethy, who had kept plot nine since the Coronation, said it was vandalism, and then she stood in front of it every morning with her flask. I asked her what she thought they were breathing in there. She said the same air as the rest of us, only filtered, which was the trouble with it.

By March the drips had run down the brick in black threads, and the runner beans on plot twelve climbed up along them without being asked. Dot planted marigolds at the base to hide where the paint had seeped into the compost. She said that was for the bees. I think it was so she had an excuse to keep standing there.

When the council men came with their grey power washer in April, they stopped at the heart. Dot had dragged an upturned crate in front of it and sat down with her arms folded. They looked at her, looked at the couple, and went back to their van. The wall still has the two of them leaning in, the red gone pale, and the bees working the marigolds underneath.
