Matchbox with red match heads
Traditional · Mixed · Photo
A matchbox is drawn in a three-quarter view with a thick black outline, a dotted striking surface and a grey-shaded side. Several matches with red heads poke out from the open top edge. The surrounding skin shows a red flush, and the tattoo itself is set against a plain background with the subject centred in the frame.

The matchseller on Gull Street never sold a box with fewer than thirty sticks in it, and he never sold one to anyone who came in after the bells had gone. Tomas knew this. He still came in at midnight with a shilling in his fist and his mother's lamp gone dark on the sill behind him.

The old man slid a box across the counter without looking up. Black card, the striking pad worn to grey dots by a thousand scrapes. 'Light only what you mean to see,' he said. 'The heads are short. They burn quick and they don't come back.' Tomas asked what it cost. The man said the box already knew.
He walked home through the rain-slick wynds, the city silent except for a cart somewhere and the drip from the gutters. At the corner of Bell Yard he struck the first match and the flame jumped up as red as its head. He lit the lamp in his mother's window, then the next, and the next, down the length of the street until every sill along Gull Street was glowing and anyone lost in the dark could see the way.
When the box was empty he found the shilling still in his pocket and one match left, wrapped in paper with a name written on it in a hand he knew. He did not strike it. He carried it home and set it on the sill beside the lamp, where a person coming back in the dark could find it.
