Mrs Pryce had run the mobile library since the bridge at Holm Mill came down, and in eleven years she had never once found a book left open on purpose. So when the van hit the ruts outside Thorney Green and a copy of Persuasion slid off the shelf face down, open to the middle, she bent to retrieve it expecting a bent cover and found a folded square of card pressed into the gutter.

It was a pharmacy receipt for a bottle of cough linctus, dated March 1979. On the back, someone had drawn a small red heart in biro, shaded so hard the paper had nearly torn. Nothing else. No name. She held it up to the light from the windscreen and thought of the girl at the old school who signed her notes with a single dot, and how nobody had ever worked out who the dot was meant for.

Thursday came round and the van went out again, past the chapel and the shut post office, past the lay-by where the lorries idled. At each stop she checked the returns. A Trollope with a bus ticket for a bookmark. A cookbook with a Sunday roast ruined in pencil. Nothing with a heart.

At the last stop, a bungalow with a dog at the gate, an old man was waiting with a carrier bag of paperbacks. He took Persuasion from her hands, opened it at the middle and touched the gutter without looking. "She always did leave it there," he said. "Didn't think anyone would find it." Mrs Pryce gave him the receipt. He folded it once more and slipped it into his shirt pocket, and the van pulled away with the dog barking after it.
