Gramophone on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A vintage gramophone with a large flared horn and a turntable on a wooden base is drawn in black linework. The strokes are fine and sketch-like, with light hatching on the horn and base, and the design is set against a plain skin background. The image is a close crop of the forearm with a pink fabric sleeve at the edge of the frame.

Mind the step, love, the platform's gone slippy since the rain. Sit yourself on that bench by the left luggage, it's the only one without a pigeon on it. I'll tell you about Ada Pryce, who ran the lost property office at Hollin Road for thirty-one years and never once lost a thing she was given to mind.

One February a man came in with a brown paper parcel tied up in string, and he said his brother had left it on the 4.10 to Carlisle and wanted it back before the wedding. Ada opened it on the counter, careful as a surgeon. Inside was a gramophone, horn and all, the brass gone green at the seams, and a single record wrapped in a tea towel. Nobody had ever claimed it. Nobody came for it in all those years, and the man said, well, he'd only come because his mother had asked him to, and his mother was dead now, so he supposed it was nobody's really.

Ada wound that machine up there in the office with the door shut, and what came out was a dance band playing slightly too fast, as if the musicians had been running for a train. She sat and listened to both sides. Then she put the horn to the window so the sound would carry out over the empty track, and she said, to nobody in particular, that it had waited long enough.

They still say you can hear it some nights, if the wind is in the east and the signal's off. Mind the gap now. Off you go.
