Matching bird and heart wrist tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two clasped hands show small matching tattoos on the inner wrists, each with a simple outlined bird and a small heart. The bird outlines are thin black lines, with dotted stippling on the bellies, and the hearts are solid fills. The right wrist has a red heart while the left has a black one, set against a plain black background with the hands filling the frame.

The ledger for Gull Rest lives in the drawer under the hall barometer, and you know its smell better than your own kitchen. Every Friday in October you sit at the dining table with the lamp pulled low and go through the bookings in pencil: families who come back year after year, commercial travellers who never ask for the sea view. Your sister Maud has always done the cooking. You have always done the sums, and this year the sums say you will have to sell the piano before the February gales.

The letter from Halifax arrived on a Tuesday, between a tin of Ovaltine and the gas bill. Maud had written it in her round schoolroom hand, asking whether you would mind if she took her half of the house and went to join her husband's people for a while. You did not reply straight away. You walked down to the shingle instead, where the wind had flattened the marram grass, and you watched two wrens dart in and out of the groyne timbers, never more than a yard apart.

Next morning you wrote back in the same ink and enclosed a drawing on the back of a tide table: two small birds facing each other, a heart between them, the heart filled in solid. Maud always said you could draw nothing but birds. Perhaps that was the point. You posted it before the milk came.

Three weeks later a parcel arrived from Nova Scotia. Inside, wrapped in the Halifax Chronicle, was a ceramic wren with tiny glaze spots on its belly, and a note: put this on the sill facing the sea, so I know which way to look. You set it there at dusk. Beyond the glass the lighthouse began its slow sweep, and you turned your own wren round to face the water.
