Matching 'always' wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two people hold hands in a wooded area, and both inner wrists show the same small black tattoo. Each reads 'always' in thin, delicate script beside a triangle, circle and vertical line motif. The fine linework is crisp against the skin, and the soft, natural light keeps the composition focused on the joined hands.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Doyle on the eleventh floor of Kestrel House kept three things in her airing cupboard: a tin of shirt buttons, a glass ring with no stone, and a length of grey wool she never knitted with. When the lift broke for the third time that winter, the boys on the stairs asked her why she didn't move out. She said the building had never been hers to leave, and then she told them the story of the three brothers.

The wind that came up through the car park once offered three brothers a gift each. The eldest asked for a stick that never broke. The middle brother asked for a stone that could bring back the dead. The youngest asked only to leave without being followed, so the wind gave him a cloak of grey wool that hid him from the lift cables, the bailiffs and the rain.
The eldest's stick snapped the first time he swung it at a man over a parking space. The middle brother got his mother's voice back out of the stone, but she only ever asked him to come down the stairs, and he went. The youngest wore the cloak for seventy years and never once went to a funeral. When he was old he came back and sat in the lift with the doors open, and he said, "Always," to the lift man, who took him up without asking for a fare.
Mrs Doyle kept the ring for the middle brother and the buttons for the eldest, and the wool was hers to hide. Her grandson found the ring on a string on the landing the week she died, and the lift went up and down all night, as it always had.
