Matching small symbol tattoos on wrists
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two people hold hands outdoors against a soft, blurred green background, with their wrists turned towards the camera. Each wrist carries a small, dark, fine line symbol in black ink, with the lines thin and crisp. The shallow depth of field keeps the focus on the hands and tattoos, and the lighting is soft and natural.

The rope had frayed through in the night, so Hal stood on the wrong bank with the ferry drifting out on the grey current, shouting his sister's name until the gulls rose off the mud.

Their grandmother had said a ferry rope and a pair of hands were the same thing, that anything held at both ends could not be let go without someone pulling. She had taught them the loop knot in the winter their father drowned, the one with two tight turns that looked like a figure eight leaning over. Wenna tied it on Hal's wrist first, then he tied it on hers, and they swore the knot would hold whatever the river did.
Wenna had crossed to the far side that spring to marry a miller's son from Slade, and she had not come back over since. Hal rowed the spare punt himself once a month, but the current had always been kinder to him than the people on the other bank. Now the rope was lost and the boat was heading for Haddock Weir with nobody aboard.
Then a small boat came out of the reeds, and in its stern sat Wenna, one hand raised with the mark on her wrist turned towards him like a lamp. She had knotted a new line to the old iron stump and hauled the punt back by hand. They did not speak. Hal took her wrist and turned it, and the two knots lay together on the wet wood of the gunwale, the same loop, the same two turns, and neither of them could say which one had been tied first.
