Matching 'An unbreakable bond' script on two feet

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet rest on a striped fabric, each with the phrase 'An unbreakable bond' written in black cursive script across the top of the foot. The lettering is thin, even and uniform in both tattoos, with the two designs matching closely. The ink is black against lightly tanned skin, and the painted toenails in lilac and white sit in the foreground.

Dear Nell,

The big top came down at Hexham on Tuesday, and the wind carried the last of the sawdust across the car park as though it had been waiting years for the chance. Dad sat on the wagon step with his cap in his lap for most of an hour. I brought him tea, which he didn't drink, and then I sat beside him, which he didn't seem to mind.

You asked in your last letter whether the old banner survived the Blackpool winter. It did. Mr Calloway painted it the spring we joined, when the crowds had already started thinning and he needed something to hang above the ring that promised more than the act could deliver. Black letters on cream canvas, the words curling along the top like a line of stitching: An unbreakable bond. We thought it was soppy. We stood under it every night anyway, catching each other's wrists while the drum rolled, and somehow the audience always gasped.

This morning Dad unfolded the canvas over the lorry bed to keep the rain off the generator. I stood in the yard and watched the rain beat against the words until they blurred. I've cut a strip from the end, where the paint is thickest, and I'm posting it with this letter. Keep it somewhere dry. Tie it round whatever rope you're on next, and when the lights go down, remember the banner was only ever true because we held on.

Love, Ruth
