Matching infinity and feather ankle tattoos

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet rest side by side on a light wooden floor, each with a matching tattoo on the ankle. The design is a black infinity loop with a feather wing rising from one side, and the word forever is written in script along the lower curve. The linework is bold and the feather is shaded in soft grey, with the photo taken straight on.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The big top has a hole in its roof over the ring, and the rain comes through in a steady thread. You and Marisol stand on the wire every night anyway, because the ringmaster has promised the council inspector one more season and nobody has told the wire it is tired. Your shoes are dusted with rosin. The figure of eight painted on the canvas above the rigging has faded to the colour of weak tea, and someone has written FOREVER beneath it in marker because the show needs a name for the finale.

Marisol counts the steps aloud, the way her grandmother taught her. Eleven to the middle, a pause where the cable turns under your weight, then eleven back. You have never told her that you count to twelve. The extra step is the place where you feel the wire lean toward you like something alive. The crowd is four rows of farmers and one boy with a toffee apple, and their silence is the loudest thing in the tent.

The feathers arrive in a cardboard box from a costume shop in Leeds, two dozen grey quills stitched onto a pair of wings that weigh more than they should. Marisol pins one to your shoulder strap and tells you it looks like something that has been flying a long time. A draught gets in under the flap and a candle gutters on the ring curb, and the boy with the toffee apple stops chewing to watch it.

On the last night the wire holds. You walk it with the wings lifted and the rain stopped for once, and at the turn in the middle you do not count at all. When you reach the far platform Marisol is already laughing, the boy is on his feet, and the word above the ring is still just a word, painted by someone who expected to be here longer.
