Tom Ashby had the galley to himself when the night watch came off the Morag Rose, which was the only mercy the North Sea ever granted a cook. He scrubbed the pot where the porridge had caught at four and listened to the hull groan against the swell. Down the companionway, Ruth Carver was still quarrelling with the net mender about a torn trawl, and her voice carried up the ladder like a gull's.

Ruth had come aboard at Shields with a canvas bag and an oilskin two sizes too big. Nobody had told her the first rule of the Morag Rose, which was that you never took the last of the bread without asking. She had taken it, then cried over the crust in the pantry so quietly that Tom only knew because he had kept the kettle warm for her ever since.

The night the main hook tore away off the Farne, they sat on upturned crates in the lee of the winch and Ruth pricked two small anchors into the skin with a darning needle and a pot of Indian ink from the chandler at Blyth. It hurt more than the sea had. Tom held still and counted the swells, and when the blood came he laughed so hard the mate thought they had gone mad.

Now the Morag Rose was nosing into harbour, the chain rattling down through the murk. Tom set two mugs of tea on the table and slid one across to Ruth. She wrapped her inked finger round the handle, and the two marks sat side by side above the wood, black and steady, holding fast to nothing but each other until the tide turned.
