Small sprig and heart tattoos on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are held close together, with a delicate black sprig or branch drawn in fine line on one finger and a small outlined heart containing a peace symbol on another. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is black against the skin. The shallow focus keeps the fingers sharp while the background, a dark jumper and a light bracelet, softens into blur.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Right, shift the kettle over, you're letting the heat out of my story before it's started. Two brothers, Ray and Dennis Hollis, had a plot at the end of Cinder Lane, and their father had grown runner beans on it for forty years without once asking anybody for help. When he died the council wanted the land back, and the boys stood either side of the gate arguing about who'd carry the spade.

Nobody remembers who spoke first, only that by the next spring they'd stopped speaking at all. Dennis ploughed his half. Ray let his go to couch grass. Every Sunday the pair of them walked past each other at the gate with their eyes on the ground, the way you'd pass a dog you didn't trust.

Then one February morning Ray found a hawthorn sprig snapped off by the frost, lying on the path between their two sheds. He picked it up, took it round to Dennis's side, and pushed it through the wire without a word. Dennis pushed back a seed packet with a heart drawn on the front in biro, a peace sign folded inside the heart, and the word SOWN in capitals underneath.

Come spring the hawthorn had rooted in a jam jar on Ray's windowsill, and the two plots met in the middle with one row of beans running right across the boundary. You can still see the gap in the wire where they both kept reaching through. Mind your cup now, that's the bit I wanted you to hear.
