Matching infinity ring tattoos on fingers
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are interlaced so that a finger tattoo is visible on each of two fingers. Each tattoo is a black infinity symbol worn like a band around the finger, one filled with an interlaced knot pattern and the other with curling swirls and a small pale centre. The ink is solid black with bold outlines, set against soft skin tones and a dark blue fabric background.

The nets came back from the Dogger grounds torn in the same place every winter, and Ada Quayle said it was the cold that rotted the twine. Her husband Tam said it was the cod, which had learned to bite. Neither of them believed a word of it, so they went out together on the last night of February with a lantern and a bundle of tarred cord.

Out past the breakwater the water lay flat as slate. Tam hauled the net up from the bottom and found the tear again, a clean round hole as if someone had cut it with a thumbnail. Ada knotted a sheet bend over the gap, then a second one woven through the first, and they worked in silence while the fleet's bells rang behind them. Every knot had to lie flat, he had taught her, or the sea would find the gap.
Near dawn the lantern guttered and the cord ran out. Ada pulled a length of blue wool from her sleeve, the thread she had been meaning to use for a jumper, and knotted it into the mesh. The tear closed. Tam laughed at her for wasting wool, then went quiet, because the hole did not come back and the net sat tight as a drum.
They sold the catch that week and bought nothing for themselves except two thin bands of tin from the chandler's. Tam kept a tangle that never ends on one finger, and Ada kept a curl of wave over a pale pebble from the shore on the other. The old fishers in the harbour said a knot tied twice cannot be pulled apart, and nobody argued with them.
