Matching big sis and little sister ankle tattoos

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two ankles are shown side by side, each with a black ink tattoo. The left reads big SIS in flowing script with a solid Mickey Mouse ear silhouette above, and the right reads little SISTER in thinner lettering with a matching silhouette. The linework is clean and solid with no shading, and the ink is entirely black on a plain light skin tone against a carpeted floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Haddon Cross believed the Pritchard girls had ever agreed on anything, so when Nell came down the stairs with a needle held in the candle flame and said Ada could have the other ankle, the whole kitchen went quiet. Their mother was at the sink. Their father was out at the quarry until dark. Ada, who was nine and still believed her sister could stop rain by frowning at it, put her foot up on the chair without a word.

Nell had copied the shape from the chalk board outside the picture house, where the projectionist drew a round-eared mouse for the children every Saturday. She pressed the first ring in with thread-wound pin and a bottle of ink from the post office, one dot at a time, while Ada counted aloud to keep from crying. The bigger words went on Nell's own ankle in a curling hand taken from the hymn book. Ada's came out small and square, because Nell said a little sister ought to have the smaller words and that was that.

The following spring Nell took the early train to the city with one case and a ticket she had bought with the egg money. Ada walked the length of the platform beside the carriage, her stocking pulled down to show the black ears under the lamp, and Nell leaned out of the window and laughed so hard the guard had to tell her to sit down.

Ada kept the mouse on her ankle through three winters and a wedding. When the letters blurred at the edges she traced them with her thumb at night, the way a person checks a door they already know is locked.
