Matching Big Sis and Lil Sis wrist tattoos
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a black script tattoo of the words Big Sis or Lil Sis, with a small red heart next to each. The linework is bold and solid, with the lettering set at a slight upward slant across each wrist. The black lettering and red hearts are set against plain skin, with a blurred background of dark and light fabric.

Mags had the marker between her teeth when Dot came down the stairs with the kettle still hissing. "You're not writing on me," Dot said. "Only on the paper," Mags said, and spat the cap into her palm. Outside, the Saturday market had already packed up its stalls, and the drizzle left the pavement grey and shining.

Their father had left a biscuit tin of lettering stencils from a sign-writing job he never finished, and in it they had found a loose copper-plate alphabet, every letter leaning like a gate blown open. Mags traced BIG SIS on the back of an envelope, then LIL SIS beneath it, and slid it across the oilcloth. Dot read it twice, which was her way of saying yes.
They rode the number 14 down to the harbour, where Ruben Teague kept a tattoo room above a chandler's. He did not ask why two grown women wanted the same words in the same hand. He turned the envelope over, set the stencil against Dot's wrist, and said a small red heart was the only colour a sensible sister would pay for. Dot paid. Mags held the arm of the chair the whole time and never once admitted it stung.
The tin still sits on the windowsill, the envelope tucked inside with its corners gone soft. When one of them rings the other at midnight now, the first thing said is what it was on the stairs: "You're not writing on me." And the answer, every time, is "Only on the paper."
