Matching hamsa hand tattoos on forearms

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two near-identical hamsa hand tattoos sit side by side on the inner forearms, one above the other. Each design uses fine black outlines with dense ornamental detail, including a central flower, yin-yang motifs, scrollwork and chevron bands. The tattoos are solid black ink with no colour, shown in a close, evenly lit photograph.

Dear Nadia,

The lift in Carrick House has been out since Tuesday, so I have taken the stairs to the fourteenth floor every day with the shopping and your letter in my coat pocket, and by the time I reach the door I am too breathless to be cross about it. Mrs Okafor on eleven says the council will fix it when the pigeons learn to use the buttons. She is joking, but only just.

I did what you asked. I took Dad's old drawing pad out from under the bed and traced the hamsa from the brass plate in his hallway, the one with the eye in the palm. I added the flower in the middle, the way he drew them on the backs of envelopes, and the little chevrons he said were for walking forward without looking down. Then I drew the yin and yang in the fingers, because you always said the hand needed something to argue with. It took three evenings and a pot of tea gone cold each time.

Now the sheet sits on the table beside the kettle, and I cannot decide whether it is finished. Yours will be the left arm, you said, and mine the right, so that when we sit across from each other at Mum's table on Sunday our hands will mirror in the middle. I have told the man at the parlour on the high street that I want it in fine black line and nothing else, because we never needed colour to know who we were.

Ring me on Sunday before you come. Bring the pad. I want to see whether your lines are as shaky as mine.

Love, Sofia
