Matching bunny hands heart tattoos on forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three forearms are shown, each with a matching tattoo of two hands forming a heart, with the outlines shaped to suggest bunny heads and ears. The word love is written in a small, loose script beneath each design. The linework is thin and black, with no shading, and the tattoos sit against warm skin lit by a dim, low-angled light.

Dear Ruth, Tom and little Ada,

The wireless has gone quiet and the kettle has boiled twice, so I thought I would sit down and write properly instead of shouting up the stairs at nobody. Your father says the house is too big now. He says it every night, then he goes to bed at nine and leaves the lamp on in the back room for me.
Last Sunday I pulled the armchair round to face the wall by the hearth, the way we used to when the power went off in winter. Do you remember? Ruth, you always wanted the first rabbit, the one with the long ears that flopped about. Tom said the bunny was a fox in disguise, and Ada wouldn't let anyone sit near the lamp. I got my hands up, thumbs hooked, and there they were again on the plaster, two rabbits nose to nose with a heart cut out between them where the light came through.
I kept at it until my wrists ached. It is a poor thing on your own. A shadow needs somebody on the other side of the lamp to make it real.
So I am asking you to come home for Christmas, all three of you, and bring whatever children have started to talk. Stand in the back room with the lamp behind you. I will be waiting by the wall with my hands up, and you can tell me which of us is the fox.
