Matching Celtic knot wrist tattoos

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two near-identical Celtic knot designs sit on the wrists of two clasped hands, each formed from a looping, interlaced three-pointed shape. The knotwork is rendered in solid black ink with smooth, even lines and some shading that gives the strands a slight depth. The dark background and warm skin tones make the black ink stand out, with the two designs framed symmetrically on either side of the image.

Dear Wenna,

The knot-wright at Harrowmere finished the last of the cords this morning, and I have seen the work with my own eyes, so you may stop asking whether the old tales are true. He dipped his fine needle in soot and pricked the three-pointed loop slowly, then wiped it and started again so the lines would hold. Mother says the pattern has no beginning, which is why the council calls it a bind and not a mark.

Ysolde and Corran came up from the salt flats on the third day of the autumn fair, both grey with dust and stubborn as mules. They have been promised to each other since the spring flood took the ferry bridge, and the elders would not seal it until they swore on the same knot. I carried the cup of water while the knot-wright worked. Corran made jokes the whole time, and Ysolde never once looked away from the needle, and that was how I knew which of them would keep the oath.

Here is the strange part. When the ink dried, the two knots were not quite alike. The first had its loops turned a hair toward the heart, and the second leaned outward, as if it were looking for the door. The knot-wright only shrugged. He said a matched pair is never mirror-made, and that the difference is the place where the two of them will have to meet halfway.

Come home before the frost. I want you to see it, and I want you to tell me whether you can still tell which knot is which when the lamps are low.

Yours in haste, Ide
