Two near-identical small tattoos sit on the ankles of two feet, each showing a black crescent moon with short rays around the edge and two small stars beside it. The linework is thin and even, with the ink solid black and no shading. The feet rest on weathered red wooden boards, and the tattoos are the focal point of the square composition.

Come closer, you with the wet hat, there's room under the awning if you stop dripping on my figs. Right. The sun and the moon were sisters once, and they were never meant to share a sky, so a wise woman at the Ashby Fold market had them sign a bargain in ink. The sun took the days and the moon took the nights, and they'd meet only at the edges, where the light goes thin.

Now you'll want to know why the moon wears her rays like a crown. She wears them because she has to shout to be heard over her sister. Every dusk she lifts her silver arm and two stars come out to stand beside her, always two, because one would be lonely and three would argue over who shone brightest.

The rain has fallen since the harvest, and the moon has been slipping. Each night she sits lower, and the stallholders say she's tired of being looked at through puddles. So the sisters went back to the old woman, who laughed into her tea and said the bargain is kept by the roads that walk it, not by the sky. Go and meet each other, she said, and see what the road says.

So they did. They met on the red boards of the bridge where the stalls end, and the stars climbed down to ink themselves into the pattern of the bargain so neither sister would forget the way. Hand me that cloth, love. Some say they still meet there when the rain stops, and that's the only time you'll see the moon rise before the sun has gone to bed.
