Matching chickadees on two forearms

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms each carry a chickadee in flight, with the bird on the left shown with wings swept upward and the bird on the right shown with wings raised and spread. The feathers, eye stripes and black caps are rendered with fine shading and soft gradients. Warm ochre tones on the breasts and muted greys on the wings and tails sit against the natural skin, and the two birds are placed as a mirrored pair.

The mist had not lifted off the marsh by seven, so Hetty Boyle kept the nets furled and made tea in the hut instead. Through the window the feeder swung on its wire, and two chickadees landed on it at once, one from the left and one from the right, as if they had agreed the time beforehand.

She had been ringing birds at Cold Creek for thirty-one years and had never seen a pair so alike. Same black caps, same white cheek stripe, same ochre flush on the breast, as if someone had held a mirror to one bird and printed the other. Her husband Dan used to say they were a couple who had fallen out and kept their arguments at a distance. He had been gone four winters now, and she still wrote his initials at the top of the log sheet out of habit.

The pair came every morning through November. She caught them on the third day, a clean grey morning with the nets heavy with dew, and fitted two steel rings to two thin legs, one for each. She wrote them in the book as left and right, because that was all she could tell apart.

In December the feeder stayed empty. Hetty drove up the lane twice to look at the bare hedge, and on the second Sunday she found one bird alone on the fence post, wings half open as if it had forgotten which way to go. She took the spare rings off the hook, weighed them in her palm, and wrote the date beside the blank line. Then she went inside and put the kettle on for two.
