Matching coordinate tattoos on two ankles

Lettering · Ankle · Colour · Photo

Two pairs of latitude and longitude coordinates are written in neat, blue lettering on two ankles. The tattoos are identical on each leg, with the numbers stacked in two lines. The photograph is taken at an angle on a wooden floor, with the legs and feet filling most of the frame.

Dear Tom, The wind has got under the tent flap again, so forgive the smudges. We reached the col on Tuesday, two days behind the schedule Harrow drew up in London, and I have finally fixed the two points you asked about. Copy them out carefully, because the pencil keeps smearing in this damp: N44°7'2278" W70°10'1759" for the bench mark cut into the granite below the pass, and N44°6'1264" W70°12'53195" for the spring on the far slope.

The first is easy. Harrow's men chiselled an arrow into the slab and a cross beside it, and the rain has not yet worn them away. The second took me most of a morning. The stream goes underground there, under a shelf of black rock, and it comes back up a hundred yards lower in a pool so cold it stings the teeth. I stood at the edge with the theodolite and felt faintly foolish, as if I were the only man in the territory who had ever cared where water chose to surface.

I have left a biscuit tin under a flat stone at the second point, with a folded note inside and a pencil stub. I did not write what the note says. You will know it when you find it, or you will never find it, and I have decided I can live with either.

When you come up in the autumn, bring the good boots and that map of yours with the wrong river on it. Take the numbers from the map, not from me. We will argue about it at the fire, as we always did, and I will let you win on the spring.
