Two people show matching black FRIENDS lettering in a blocky sans-serif font across their inner wrists and forearms.

Matching FRIENDS lettering on two wrists

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms are shown side by side, each with the word FRIENDS written in black ink in a blocky, hand-drawn style. The letters run across the inner wrist and onto the forearm, with the first arm's lettering partly cropped at the left edge. The ink is solid black on pale skin against a dark wooden floor, and the close framing keeps the focus on the matching designs.

Dear Nell,

The second bed in room four still has the dent where you used to sit cross-legged reading my magazines, and I have not had the heart to strip it. Mrs Pargeter in number two asked for the key again this morning, claiming she left her spectacles under the pillow, and I let her look, because what is the harm in an old woman wanting to be somewhere she was once happy?

The ferry timetable has changed. The Thursday boat no longer stops at the pier, so the post comes by van now, and the driver, a boy called Tomasz with a wide laugh, leaves everything in the porch under a stone. Your letter came that way last Tuesday. I read it on the step with the gulls shouting over the car park, and I laughed out loud at the bit about the ferry captain's wig.

You asked whether I'd still walk the breakwater on Saturday night. I will. We said we would go to the end and back the way we did at fifteen, wrists held out to the lamplight so the word FRIENDS caught the glare, daring the lighthouse to tell us we were too old for such nonsense. Bring your own lamp if you still have the one with the cracked lens. I'll wait at the bottom of the steps, same as always, and if the tide is high we'll get our shoes wet and not care.
