Matching infinity wrist tattoos
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side, each with an infinity symbol formed from small black lettering that runs around the loop. The linework is fine and crisp, filled with solid black ink and no shading. The warm skin tones contrast with the dark background, and the tattoos sit near the centre of each wrist.

Mary Ashby kept the signal box at Harrow Cross for nineteen years, and every morning she read the timetable pinned to the wall before she lit the stove. Her sister Ada had gone to the coast with a fisherman, and the letters came twice a year, always smelling of tar and salt. The last one said only that the ring of copper wire was still in Ada's coat pocket, and that the words wound round it the same way from either end, so a person could never tell where the sentence began.

The two of them had made the ring the summer before Ada left, bending wire from the old telegraph spool and pricking the words into it with a hatpin. KETTLE ON, LAMP LIT, COME HOME, KETTLE ON, and round again. Mary had said it was a daft way to say anything. Ada had said that was the point, because a message that never stopped could never be too late.
In October the fog sat on the cutting for three days, and on the fourth a single lamp came swinging up the line from the coast. Mary put down her flag and walked the platform to the very end, where the rails ran out into the field and the engineers had always said the track went round the hill and came back to the same spot. The train slowed. A woman stepped down with a wet canvas bag and a copper ring turning on her finger.
Neither of them spoke. Mary held out her own ring, and Ada held out hers, and they turned the two circles together until the words lined up. KETTLE ON, LAMP LIT. The kettle, Mary thought, could wait a minute longer.
