Matching swirl symbol tattoos on two feet
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two identical black tattoos of a looping symbol with curled ends sit on the top of two feet, one on each. The linework is smooth and solid black with no visible shading, and the ink is crisp against the skin. The photograph is taken close up, with pink and black flip-flops on either side and the two tattoos placed to mirror each other.

Dear Morag, the gulls have finally given up on the rail outside the lamp room, so I can write without shouting over them. The relief keeper came across on Tuesday's boat with a face like a wet tide, and I have spent every evening since trying to explain what the sea does at the foot of the Skerry in a north-easter. He thinks I am making it up. You would have believed me.

I found the carving you made on the step beside the oil store, the swirl with its curled ends that you swore was a wave folding back on itself. Mr Gunn says the two of you did a second one on the slate by the landing the summer before you left, the mirror of the first, as if you were signing for each other. I sat on that step with the lamp unlit and traced both with my thumb until the cold got into my knuckles.
The supply boat is due again on the ninth. I have packed the logbook, the brass polish and your letters, which I have read so often the folds have gone as soft as cloth. I will leave the logbook for the relief and carry the letters down to the jetty myself, because the sea has never once asked me to account for my nights.
Tonight I will light the lamp at dusk as I always do. When the beam goes round it will throw the shape of your carving out across the water, and I like to think somewhere a boat is turning towards it, two curls of light pointing home to the same harbour.
